SOCU’s Employees Donated $1,500
October 17th, 2015Streator firefighters recently got a boost in their campaign to raise money for the military flag project in downtown Streator.
SOCU’s employees donated $1,500 as part of the credit union’s casual days fund, and a check was presented to Streator Fire Fighters Local 56 at SOCU’s July quarterly meeting.
As part of the union’s campaign, each city block will be dedicated to a specific branch of the United States military, as well as a block for Prisoners of War and a block with the American flag. With the assistance of veterans, the department hopes to have the flags flown over military bases with a certificate to display where the flags have been flown.
“This generous donation will allow us to purchase more flags and special spinning flagpoles to keep the flags from getting wrapped up,” said union President Kurt Snow. “The goal now is to do Main Street, and each side street 100 north and 100 south from the river back east to Shabbona.”
SOCU Marketing Director Dana Stillwell said SOCU’s employees will next raise money for the Walldogs project, coming to Streator in 2018 to paint murals around the community in honor of Streator’s sesquicentennial. SOCU’s goal is to raise $10,000 for the project and the SOCU board will match the employees’ donation for a total of $20,000 to the Walldogs.
Donations for the flag project are accepted through the mail at Streator Fire Fighters Local 56, C/O Veterans Project, 108 N. Wasson St. Streator, IL 61364.
